Measuring Pellet consumption in a Pellet Grill

For those of you with Wood Pellet Grills, it’s easy to get a running cost. This is handy information when you are wondering if you have enough pellets to cook what you want.

You could also put enough of one type of pellet in to start the cook, then top up with a different flavour to finish.

Record the Temperature, Wind and shade conditions.
Pellet Brand and flavour
BBQ Brand/Model
Modifications if any

Test One:
Make sure the Grill is COLD.
Clean out the hopper so only the pellets in the auger are left.
Weigh out 5 kg of pellets and put them in the hopper.
Start the Grill and set the target temperature to XXX. Start a timer at the same time.
Record the time it takes for the grill to come to temperature.
Run the Grill for three hours after it has come to temperature.
Turn the grill OFF.
Remove and weigh the pellets.

Then:

Test Two:
Make sure the Grill is COLD.
Clean out the hopper so only the pellets in the auger are left.
Weigh out 5 kg of pellets and put them in the hopper.
Start the Grill and set the target temperature to XXX. Start a timer at the same time.
Record the time it takes for the grill to come to temperature.
Turn the grill OFF immediately temperature is reached.
Remove and weigh the pellets
